Aprendiendo a ser soldados. Learning to be soldiers.

Como cada septiembre en China, empieza “la vuelta al cole”. Hordas de jóvenes venidos de diferentes lugares del país toman las ciudades universitarias con la intención de empezar el nuevo curso académico.
As always in September, China is going back to school. Bands of young people coming from different places of the country take the university cities with the intention of starting the new term.

Durante alrededor de dos semanas, los campus de las universidades chinas se tiñen de verde caqui y azul militar.  Los estudiantes son instruidos por el Ejército Popular de Liberación de la República Popular de China a través de un estricto programa diseñado por el gobierno.

During about two weeks, the Chinese universities campus look khaki and navy blue coloured. Students are instructed by the People’s Liberation Army of the Republic of China by means of a strict programme designed by the government.

 “A veces es aburrido y agotador. Empezamos la instrucción a las 7:30 de la mañana y la terminamos a las 18:00 de la tarde. Aunque cada 3 días, tenemos que estar listos a las 5:00 de la madrugada. Es muy cansado, sin embargo sabemos que es importante, primero para nuestro país y segundo, para nosotros”.
“Durante las dos semanas que dura la instrucción, somos soldados, llevamos este uniforme y nos sentimos orgullosos por ello”. Chen Yizhou (20 años), estudiante de la Universidad de Fudan (Shanghai).

“Sometimes it’s boring and exhausting. We start the instruction at 7.30 am and we finish at 6.00 pm.  Although we have to be ready at 5.00 am every 3 days. It’s really tiring, however we know that it’s important, first for our country, second for us”.

“During the two weeks of the instruction period we’re soldiers, we’re wearing this uniform and we’re proud of it”. Chen Yizhou, a twenty-year-old student at Fudan University (Shanghai).

La legislación china considera este adiestramiento castrense como una parte obligatoria de la educación superior. La finalidad, tal y como lo expresan las autoridades, es promover el amor hacia la nación, fortalecer la disciplina entre los futuros cerebros del país, familiarizarse con el ejército, preparar a los jóvenes para afrontar las dificultades de la vida y también, potenciar el compañerismo.
Chinese laws consider this military instruction as a compulsory part of the higher or tertiary education. The authorities say that the purpose of this instruction is to promote the love for the nation, to strengthen the discipline among the future minds of the country, to become familiar with the army, to prepare young people to face life difficulties and also to increase the comradeship feeling.

“Aquí nos enseñan a afrontar las dificultades. Ahora entiendo mucho mejor el enorme sacrificio que el ejército hace por nosotros”. Shào Bing (20 años) estudiante de la universidad de Fudan (Shanghai).

“En EEUU muchas personas mucho más jóvenes que nosotros se enrolan en el ejército. En cambio, aquí en China, sólo recibimos entrenamiento militar durante 14 días”. Chen Lú  (20 años) estudiante de la universidad de Fudan (Shanghai).
“In the USA many people much younger than us are enlisted in the army. Here in China, in exchange, we’re instructed during a fortnight”. Chen Lu, a twenty-year-old student at Fudan University (Shanghai).

El origen de este programa de instrucción se sitúa cronológicamente justo después de las sangrientas manifestaciones que tuvieron lugar en la Plaza Tianamen en 1989.
The origin of this instruction programme is dated just after the bloody protest at Tianamen Square in 1989.
